Donald K Johnson Film Series "Spooks and Spirits

FILM SERIES
Christine Mueller

The Icelandic film, "Spooks and Spirits," will be shown on Wednesday, March 14th, 2018, at 7:00 PM, at the River Park Church in Calgary as part of the "Donald K. Johnson Film Series."
This is a free event, hosted by the Leif Eiriksson Club of Calgary. The church is located at 3818-14 A Street S.W. A reception will follow.

Family and friends are welcome. No tickets are required, and free parking is available.

The Donald K. Johnson Icelandic Film Series is organized by the Icelandic National League of North America, a non-profit service organization that promotes Icelandic heritage and culture through its activities and the activities of member clubs across North America. The film series is funded by a generous grant from Donald K. Johnson.

Summation: When Anna and her boyfriend Ingi decide to sell the house, Anna has recently inherited from her late father Ofeig, the father's ghost appears and makes one thing perfectly clear: his house won't be sold!
Prospective buyers are chased away by very strange events, which confirm that Ofeig, the ghost, is no different from what he was in life: a charming, but
egoistic, alcoholic womanizer. Ingi tries to exorcise Ofeig, but the poltergeist world proves a tricky one. Instead of getting rid of Ofeig, another ghost is raised - a jealous former girlfriend of Ofeig. The dead lovers' bickering makes life in the house intolerable, the ghosts get ever more forceful, and selling the house is out of the question. But sometimes even ghosts can get too greedy.
When Ofeig tries to drag an innocent lady into his
dimension, the situation calls for drastic measures.

This movie is in Icelandic with English Subtitles!

My thanks to all the members who helped with the many events we had this past year.  Without the assistance of our Club’s extraordinary volunteers including all our board members these events would not happen.  We must acknowledge the Casino funds and money raised from our events that sponsor our activities.  Just a reminder that we have our next casino on April 21/22 at the Deerfoot Casino.  If you can come and work a shift please let Karl Torfason know as he is working on the scheduling for those two days.

Make Ísbíltúr — an Icelandic Ice Cream Road Trip — the Hygge of This Winter

January 30, 2018
Put that fuzzy blanket back on the couch and keep your firewood unscathed for a few extra hours – it’s ísbíltúr time.  While Americans couldn't get enough hygge last winter, another Nordic ritual belongs in our cold weather routines: ísbíltúr. The Icelandic term translates loosely to the specific act of driving around and eating ice cream. Like hygge, ísbíltúr is an intentional, precise form of recreation, though it requires leaving the house.
Check out this link to learn more about ísbiltúr.

NEWS FROM MARKERVILLE

Preserving the buttermaker’s house
(Excerpts from the Innisfail Province Nov. 28/17)

The pioneer home of a legendary buttermaker, who quietly made his mark in the pioneer Icelandic hamlet and then in Innisfail as a businessman and mayor, will be preserved for the generations ahead.

The Buttermaker House, built in Markerville more than a century ago for W.H. Jackson and his family, is also being earmarked by the Stephan G. Stephansson Icelandic Society for provincial and municipal historical designation.
Society officials say the house will complement the historic nature of Markerville as it is about the same age as the creamery, the historic Lutheran church and the pioneer Fensala Hall.

“The addition of the Buttermaker House would further enhance the programs and events that are available,” said d’Arcy Gamble, society president. She said several future usage ideas have been discussed for the home, including expanding school programming into it, displaying the interior as a model 1913 pioneer home, or being part of an oral history presentation of Markerville and area.

Leif Eiriksson Icelandic club kicked off 2018 with our Annual General Meeting on Sunday January 28th with 35 members in attendance.  The evening started with a pot luck dinner, followed by time for members to visit before our meeting at 7 PM.  Our thanks to all the members who attended and to those who donated to the pot luck.
